DNPs: Leaders for Integration of Mental Health into Pediatric Primary Care Practice

Goal of Presentation:
This presentation discusses and reviews why DNP prepared Pediatric and Family Nurse Practitioners should take the lead and be the providers for children and adolescents with mental health concerns in pediatric primary care settings.

Objectives:
1. Review the current state of care for children and adolescents with mental health and behavioral concerns in the United States.
2. Describe why DNP prepared NPs are best suited to meet the need for integrating mental health care into pediatric primary care settings.
3. Present ways to implement the role of the DNP prepared PNP/FNP as the provider for mental health care into pediatric primary care settings.

Speaker’s Background:
Dr. Van Cleve has been a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for 29 years and has extensive experience working with children and families in primary care settings as well as with children with behavioral and mental health conditions. She is currently developing a practice integrating the role of the PNP as a mental health specialist in a pediatric primary care. Her previous experience includes her work as a PNP in the Child Development Unit and Down Syndrome Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the Director of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Graduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing from 1993-2003 and at the Yale University School of Nursing from 1983-1992. Ms. Van Cleve’s experience in teaching, presenting on a variety of topics on a regional and national level, and participating in research, is extensive. She has also been involved on a variety of local, state and national nursing organizations, including President of the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board from 2000-2002 and President and co-founder of the Three Rivers National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses Chapter in 1995. She has also served on the Executive Board of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) organization as the Education Chair.

DNP in Leadership: Changing Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Culture

in a Large Urban Medical Center

Goal of Presentation:
This presentation will review changes enacted over a 12 month period to facilitate nursing culture and practice change. The theoretical models of Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations and Lewin’s Change Theory serve as the underpinning for the Nurse Executive in Behavioral Health Change.

Objectives:
1. Identify challenges of practice change in a large institution
2. Discuss the role of the DNP Nurse Executive in facilitating change in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
3. Incorporate elements of diffusion theory, change theory and modeling in promoting psychiatric nursing change.

Speaker’s Background:
Dr. Evans is Associate Vice President for Behavioral Health Services for Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, NJ. He has 34 years experience in nursing working in the areas of chronic, catastrophic illness (cancer, AIDS), addictions, general nursing and mental health. He completed a Master of Science in Counseling and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Evansville (Indiana) and a Doctor of Divinity degree from the American Institute of Holistic Theology. He is also a graduate of New York Theological Seminary with a Certificate in Christian Ministry. Ben has earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from UMDNJ School of Nursing. Dr. Evans has over twenty years experience in teaching in LPN and RN nursing programs and in continuing education for health care providers. He is the past president of the NJ Chapter of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and a past Board member at Large for the American Psychiatric Nurses’ Association. Dr. Evans is the Secretary of the NJ State Nurses’ Association. He is President of the APNA-NJ Chapter and is the founding president of the Academy of Doctors of Nursing Practice in New Jersey. His publications include: “Spirituality in HIV Disease”; “Complementary Therapies and HIV Disease” and “AIDS Grief as Dissonance to the Spirit”. He has given numerous presentations on health, mental health and spirituality. Dr. Evans is a Board Certified Specialist in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing and is a Certified Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner and Certified Laughter Leader. He is an ordained priest and bishop in the Old Catholic Communion.
