Prioritizing Novice Nurse Executive Competencies

Goal of Presentation:
Many novice nurse executive are not prepared for their role. Limited evidence or studies exist that validate the competencies most important to develop at this developmental stage.

Objectives:
1. Identify the most important competencies for Novice nurse executives to develop
2. Identify the least important competencies to develop at the novice nurse executive’s developmental level
3. Conduct a knowledge gap analysis for novice nurse executives to identify education needs

Speaker’s Background:
For over 7 years Susan MacMillan-Finlayson has held the position of Senior Vice President of Patient Care at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center. Prior to joining Mercy, Mrs. .Finlayson held various positions including, Senior Manager at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young for nine years and Director of Medical / Surgical Nursing at University of Pittsburgh, Shady Side Hospital in Pennsylvania.

In 1982, Mrs. Finlayson received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. In 1986 she received her Master’s of Science in Nursing from The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She recently completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Finlayson maintains memberships with Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives, American Organization of Nurse Executives and Sigma Theta Tau.
She is a frequent lecturer on leadership development and most recently presented at the Organization of Nurse executives national conference on developing at the vice president level in the current health care environment and on Capitol Hill regarding wellness initiatives and holistic care. She currently resides in Annapolis Maryland.

DNP Leadership in Education: DNP Practice Immersion Experiences and

the Benefit to MSN Programs and Nursing Education

Goal of Presentation:
DNPs are the practice focused experts for the nursing discipline. We present an innovation in nursing education leadership from our DNP program.

Objectives:
1. Understand how DNPs can help resolve the current nursing faculty shortage
2. Explain a creative use of the DNP practice immersion experience to benefit advanced practice nursing education.
3. Describe the impact of DNP leadership in nursing education.

Speaker’s Background:
Dr. JoAnn Trybulski, Associate Dean for Master’s and DNP Programs at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies has a long history of innovation in nursing and nursing education. She was involved in setting up educational programs and prehospital care networks in the 1970’s and 1980’s. At the University of Miami, she has participated in curriculum revision for the MSN program, in the development of the research and administration certificate programs, and led the development of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. A key faculty member in the DNP program, she is the program advisor for the DNP students. She is an editor of Primary Care: A Collaborative Practice and a reviewer for Sage publications and the journal, Hispanic Health Care International. She is a member of the National Academies of Practice.
