Cultural Perspectives in Advance Practice Nursing:
A New Elective Course in the BS to DNP and
Post Master’s DNP Program
Goal of Presentation:
As emerging health leaders, DNPs will be called to improve health outcomes in a global society. This international service learning clinical experience will engage DNP students in direct and indirect care of families, children, and women in a selected developing country. This online course culminates in a health care mission trip to a third world setting. Students prepare for the experience by participating in online learning modules and discussions, course projects, on-campus class meetings before the trip.
In our ongoing evaluation of The College of St. Scholastica BS-DNP and Post-Master’s DNP program, it was identified that opportunities were needed to enhance and integrate DNP Essentials and clinical opportunities throughout the curriculum. The cultural experience integrates the following DNP Essentials:
I. Scientific underpinnings for Practice
IV. Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the
Improvement and Transformation of Health Care
V. Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care
VI. Interprofessional collaboration for improving patient and population health
outcomes
VIII. Advanced Practice Nursing
Objectives:
1. Explore service-learning activities as a means for integrating the Essentials into DNP curriculum.
2. Discuss benefits and challenges of incorporating service – learning experiences into a DNP curriculum.
3. Identify methods to adapt service-learning experiences into a DNP curriculum. Objective 4: Integrate/ investigate the use of an electronic clinical log to document patient and population care in association with the DNP Essentials
