Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Regarding Alcohol Use Screening and Counseling

If you are a nationally certified nurse practitioner (NP) practicing in primary care, I am inviting you to participate in this anonymous, brief survey titled. The purpose of this study is to examine NPs’ knowledge, attitudes and general practices in providing screening and counseling for patients who consume alcohol. This survey will also capture self-evaluation of skills and resources to identify potential barriers. Personal characteristics and demographics will also be assessed.
This survey is strictly anonymous and should only take about 10 minutes of your time. Your completion of the survey will serve as your implied consent and you have the right to refuse or discontinue participation at any time during the survey.
I am in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at Old Dominion University, and this survey is part of my Capstone Project. Your participation will provide insight for potential interventions for alcohol use screening and counseling by nurse practitioners. The barriers to screening and counseling experienced exclusively by nurse practitioners have yet to be thoroughly evaluated as prior studies have only focused on physicians.
Thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 518-414-8325 or skilb001@odu.edu or Dr. Carolyn Rutledge (Responsible Principal Investigator) at 757-683-5009 or crutleg@odu.edu; or Dr. Tancy Vandecar-Burdin, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) Chair at Old Dominion University, at 757-683-3802 or tvandeca@odu.edu to review this matter with you. You may also contact the Office of Research at 757-683-3460.
