This educational offering provides 0.17 CEU and was presented in the Clinical track. The course includes a static poster and an MP4 video file from the presentation originally shared at the 14th National Doctors of Nursing Practice Conference at the Swissotel in Chicago, August 2021.

Paula Kustenbauder, DNP, RN
Paula Kustenbauder is a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at a level II trauma center in central Pennsylvania and a nurse educator at Penn State Altoona Campus. She is a certified critical care nurse and nurse educator.

Purpose
The purpose of this presentation is to share the statistically significant results of a quality improvement project, which increased nurses’ compassion satisfaction and compassion self-efficacy in communicating effectively with patients and families who are suffering from serious illness, with DNP prepared leaders of organizations impacted by low communication scores on HCAHPS surveys. Additionally, the presentation will address the factors that impact the delivery of quality care, including communication that lacks compassion and empathy.
