The course includes PowerPoint (in PDF) and an MP3 audio file from the presentation originally shared at the 14th National Doctors of Nursing Practice Conference at the Swissotel in Chicago, August 2021. Susan Dowell, DNP, RN-C Dr. Dowell serves as the Associate Director of Nursing and Associate Professor at Ohio University-Eastern. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing Education, and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Ohio University. She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Findlay. In addition to her classroom experience, Dr. Dowell has experience as a simulation specialist, remediation specialist, clinical instructor and is specialty certified in In-Patient Obstetrical Nursing. Dr. Dowell brings over 30 years of nursing experience to her teaching and remains active as an obstetrical nurse and Childbirth Educator. Purpose A quality, evidence-based postpartum education program has the potential to decrease post-discharge maternal-infant complication risks, decrease readmission rates, contribute to decreased morbidity and mortality, and improve maternal perception and satisfaction with her overall birth care experience. However, there is insufficient evidence that clearly defines an effective teaching method for delivering postpartum education. The purpose of this project was to develop and investigate the effectiveness of such a program, using an Individualized Patient Education Checklist combined with the teach-back method as an evidenced-based approach to delivering postpartum patient education and improving patient satisfaction.
